A Perfect Engagement: Matt and Amanda - Local Trends

Matt Manna and Amanda Denton

Matt Manna and Amanda Denton

Winston-Salem, N.C.

To celebrate my boyfriend Matt’s graduation from Appalachian State University in May of this year, we took a long weekend to New York City. It was also my first trip to the city.

On our first night there we had dinner reservations and Matt told me that he had a surprise for me before we left for the restaurant. We got in a cab and ended up in Central Park, where Matt had arranged for us to have a carriage ride through the park. Our driver took us through the park telling us the history of some of the different sights and the city, and stopped at Cherry Hill for us to get out and take pictures.

We walked down the sidewalk to the waterfront, looking out at the sun setting over the Dakota and some of the other beautiful NYC buildings. Then, he got down on one knee and popped the question, holding a gorgeous ring that featured an heirloom diamond passed down from his grandmother! Needless to say, it was the perfect way to start the weekend, and I had a hard time speaking or thinking clearly for the rest of the carriage ride!

Married: May 27, 2007

Wedding Ceremony and Reception: Frazier International History Museum

Florist: Old Louisville Florist

Cakes: Heitzman Bakery

Photography: Miller Photography
DJ: Kenny Sauter — Masters of Music

Phil asked Megan to marry him on December 29, 2006, after he found out he would be deployed to Iraq in the next 6 months. “We were spending the night at our friend’s house after a get-together," says Megan. "I was just about to fall asleep when Phil tapped me on the shoulder. I groggily rolled over, and found Phil on the edge of the bed with an engagement ring. I said yes!” Next, Phil and Megan’s friends were awakened to the sound of Megan yelling “I’m engaged!”

Although there was no specific theme or idea behind their wedding, Megan and Phil knew they wanted fried chicken; and Louisville is the home to world-famous Kentucky Fried Chicken. “As silly as this sounds, my grandparents had fried chicken at their wedding 52 years ago," says Megan. "They had a picture taken of them while they each held a chicken leg to their mouths. Phil and I had the same picture taken of us, and now, it sits side-by-side in a frame next to my grandparents.”

Megan says that the most emotional moment for her was the father-daughter dance. “Every girl dreams of their big day, and every father dreads having to give their daughter away, so I knew it would be a hard moment to get through. I bec...

Melissa and Michael have known each other since age 17, and dated off and on throughout high school. After dating exclusively for three years, Michael finally proposed. “I had lost the stone to my favorite turquoise ring. A few days later, Michael told me he found the stone. When I asked him where he found it, he said ‘right here’ and pulled out a beautiful, emerald-cut diamond engagement ring and popped the question!” Needless to say, Melissa liked her new ring much better.

Melissa got her dress from Paula’s Formal Affairs. “I would recommend them to anyone. They were great!” The tuxedos came from Sam Meyers. “The guys looked sharp -even the ring bearer, which happened to be our dog!”

Michael and Melissa both admitted to being especially emotional while saying their vows — they wrote their own. “As we read our vows to each other, we realized that we would truly be spending the rest of our lives together, and our friends and family were all there to share that moment with us.”

In fact, the whole day was emotional for Melissa. Both her father and grandfather could not be there to walk her down the aisle. “I always said I would have them both walk me down the aisle (one on each arm). Since they couldn’t be there with me, I carried a framed picture of both of them down the aisle, and set them down in the front row.”

Melissa and Michael celebrated their marriage by taking a Carnival cruise to the Caribbean Islands. “We had a blast!”

Now that the couple has experienced the wedding planning process, Melissa offers some simple advice: Don’t sweat the small ...
