Wedding music helps set the mood for your wedding reception. It will help make a memorable occasion unforgettable. You have many choices when it comes to entertainment. If you’d like to have live wedding reception music, you should consider all the advantages for your wedding planning , along with a few considerations.

Your options for live wedding reception music can seem endless. There’s big band, classical, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, Dixieland, harpists — the list goes on and on. The only limitations on your reception music options are size of the site, the number of guests and your taste and style.

The rule of thumb for a live band or orchestra is that you’ll need five pieces for up to 150 guests, six or seven for 200 and a full-size group of 12 to 15 musicians for 300 or more guests. Of course, smaller, more intimate wedding receptions can feature duets, trios or even a soloist for wedding music options.

Start shopping for your live wedding reception music early, particularly if your top choice is very popular or if your celebration will be held at peak party season. Some bands and musicians are booked as far ahead as 18 months before an event.

There are two essential rules to follow when you look for live wedding music :

  1. First, don’t hire a wedding band you haven’t heard. At the very least, acquire a demo tape. Then make sure you’ll get the musicians you actually heard, not substitutes.
  2. Second, insist on a varied program of wedding reception music. Your guests will range in age and taste. If you don’t offer something that appeals to each segment, disappointment in your choice of live entertainment is likely.
